How We Use Shopify's AI to Streamline Sports Card Cataloging at Fan-Tastic Cards & Comics
Running a card shop means cataloging hundreds (sometimes thousands) of sports cards with accurate details—player names, teams, sets, card numbers, and special attributes like autographs or numbered parallels. It's time-consuming work, and accuracy matters when collectors are searching for specific cards.
That's why we've started using Shopify's built-in AI feature to speed up our cataloging process while maintaining the detail and accuracy our customers expect. Here's how we do it—and how you can too if you're running your own card shop or e-commerce store.
The Setup: Using Shopify's AI in the Description Field
Shopify's AI tool is accessible right in the product description editor. Here's our process:
- Take a clear photo of the sports card (front and back if possible)
- Upload the image to the product listing in Shopify
- Click the AI button in the Description field
- Set the tone to "Expert" (this gives more detailed, professional output)
- Use our custom prompt (see below)
Our Custom AI Prompt for Sports Cards
This is the prompt we use to get consistent, structured card details every time:
"Please identify the card attributes from this picture and list them in an HTML bulleted list format with the following details:"
- Player Name
- Season
- Team
- Set
- Card Number
- Year Manufactured
- Vendor (e.g., Topps, Panini, Upper Deck)
- Sport
- Card Attributes (e.g., autograph, patch, numbered, rookie, parallel, insert)
- Short Description
- A short statistic or fact from that season
The AI analyzes the card image and returns a clean, formatted HTML list with all these details—ready to paste directly into the product description.

What We Love About This Method
- Speed: What used to take 5-10 minutes per card now takes 1-2 minutes
- Consistency: Every card listing follows the same format, making it easier for customers to compare
- Accuracy: The AI is surprisingly good at identifying sets, parallels, and special attributes
- SEO-friendly: Detailed, keyword-rich descriptions help our cards show up in search results
Important: AI Isn't Perfect—Always Review
While Shopify's AI is impressive, it's not flawless. We've noticed occasional errors, especially with:
- Team identification (especially for players who were traded mid-season)
- Parallel variations (sometimes it misses refractors or color variants)
- Obscure sets or inserts
Our rule: We always double-check the AI output against the actual card and cross-reference with resources like SportsCardPro.com or Beckett before publishing.
Think of AI as a smart assistant, not a replacement for human expertise. It handles the heavy lifting, but you're still the expert who ensures accuracy.
Refining the Prompt Over Time
We've tweaked our prompt several times based on the errors we encountered. For example:
- We added "Year Manufactured" because the AI sometimes confused the season depicted with the year the card was actually printed
- We specified "HTML bulleted list" to get consistent formatting
- We asked for "a short statistic or fact" to add storytelling value and engage collectors
Don't be afraid to experiment with your prompt. The more specific you are, the better the results.
The Bottom Line: AI Enhances, Doesn't Replace
Using Shopify's AI for card cataloging has been a game-changer for our workflow at Fan-Tastic Cards & Comics. It saves time, improves consistency, and lets us focus on what we do best—curating great cards and serving our customers.
But it's not magic. It's a tool that works best when combined with your knowledge and attention to detail.
If you're running a card shop or e-commerce store, I highly recommend giving Shopify's AI a try. Start with a simple prompt, refine it based on your results, and always review the output before publishing.
